How long do wildfires last?
Two fires that began in Los Angeles County last week are likely among the most destructive in the state’s history and are still burning.
The Palisades and Eaton fires have consumed more than 37,000 acres in Southern California, with both at varying degrees of containment as of Thursday.
Both fires are expected to be among the top five most destructive fires in California history, Cal Fire said on X on Friday, as more than 8,000 structures have been confirmed destroyed in these fires combined, according to the department.
Over one week since their start, questions about the fires loom, including when they will be extinguished.
Yet there’s not an easy answer to how long wildfires last.
“There’s no certain metrics of saying, ‘We expect it to be out in 14 days based on these conditions,’ because it’s hard to predict those kind of things and these winds are challenging,” Jim Menakis, branch chief for fire ecology with the Forest Service, told The Desert Sun.
