As longtime conference opponents in the Western Athletic Conference and Mountain West, the rivalry game always took place in mid-to-late November.

This will be the first year since 1967 that the rivalry game will take place before November as conference opponents.

Last November, BYU edged Utah 22-21 at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Another game that is circled on the calendar is the rematch of the Alamo Bowl between BYU and Colorado on Sept. 27 in Boulder. This is another surprisingly early matchup, with the rematch taking place at the start of Big 12 play for the Cougars.
